Ecologists say no to ONGC gas plant proposal

The Dahanu Taluka Environment Welfare Association (DTEWA) and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) - chapter Dahanuhave opposed the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) proposal to set up a gas processing plant in Dahanu.

Last month, when ONGC had approached the state for 2,000 acres in Dahanu to set up th plant, chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad had assured ONGC that the government would view the proposal positively. Phiroza Tafti, convenor of INTACH-Chapter Dahanu, said the taluka had been declared an ecologically fragile area by the union ministry of environment and forests. A DTEWA member said even Reliance Energy that has a thermal power plant in Dahanu was not allowed to expand its plant.
