The Dahanu Taluka Environment Welfare Association (DTEWA) and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) - chapter Dahanuhave opposed the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) proposal to set up a gas processing plant in Dahanu.

Last month, when ONGC had approached the state for 2,000 acres in Dahanu to set up th plant, chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad had assured ONGC that the government would view the proposal positively. Phiroza Tafti, convenor of INTACH-Chapter Dahanu, said the taluka had been declared an ecologically fragile area by the union ministry of environment and forests. Thane fishermen to get help from ISRO Devices

Thane, June 26 (IANS) Fishermen in Thane’s Dahanu coastal area will be given distress alert transmitters, developed by India’s space agency, to help them in case of emergency when in the high seas, an official said Sunday.
The Distress Alert Transmitters (DAT), considered a lifesaving device, will be distributed in Dahanu town Tuesday (June 28) in the presence of top ranking officials from the police, the fisheries and the environment departments.
The devices have been developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in collaboration with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and are expected to help in the safety and security of fishermen in the high seas.
The device is simple and easy to operate. After a fisherman activates the DAT, the alert will be transmitted by a satellite on a particular frequency band and relayed to the ICG-Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre(MRCC).
The DAT has separate buttons to indicate various emergencies liken a fire on board, a medical emergency, a man overboard and capsizing of the vessel.
In case any of any emergency the crew has to press the appropriate button and the DAT emits a relevant signal which is transmitted through a satellite to the ICG-MRCC.
The ICG-MRCC would respond quickly based on the type of the emergency indicated by the signal and deploy a helicopter, a boat or divert a ship in the vicinity of the signal to help the distressed vessel.
Devised on the lines of the Global Positioning System, the DAT costs Rs.10,000 per piece, but will be distributed free to the fishing community, the official said.
After Dahanu, the officials would consider handing them over to fishing folks in other coastal districts like Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
The DAT is expected to be of great use during the monsoon and stormy weather conditions.

When will Churchgate-Dahanu local be launched, asks Naik

Former Railway Minister Ram Naik said, unhappy commuters may launch an agitation if the Railways do not explain what is it that is preventing them from starting the Churchgate-Dahanu local train.

“The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) claims that Virar-Dahanu Road track centering work has already been completed and the entire 75/12 car and 1/9 car EMU rakes under MUPT-I have been received.

Commuters have expressed their resentment on slow work on a number of occasions and now it’s time they get an answer,” Naik added.

Naik met Vivek Sahai, Chairman, Railway Board in New Delhi recently and told him that he must justify the delay in the launch of the local.

Relinace says it cannot supply power to Dahanu region

Reliance Infra which operates a power plant at Dahanu has pleaded its inability to supply power to the people living around Dahanu taluka owing to the agreement it has reached with the government.
The company officials made their position clear to Maneesha Chowdhary, Vice President of State Unit of BJP who led a delegation and demanded that the people from around Dahanu should be provided power by Reliance. Officials said as per the agreement reached by the company with the state government and Notification No 91, the entire power generated by Reliance at Dhahanu has to be supplied to Mumbai alone. Chowdhary pointed out to the Government Resolution which has stated that power should be provided to the areas within 5 kms of the power plant. However, the company officials suggested that the way out is to make amendment in the agreement the company has with the government. There is lot of resentment among locals over the power issue who are currently being subjected to long hours of load-shedding. Chowdhary has told the company that even a supply of 25 MW of power could radically improve the situation in the area.
